Natural source vitamin E oil concentrated down from plant oils (as opposed to synthetic vitamin E made from petroleum by-products). This is a highly bioavailable natural source of vitamin E sold in powder format. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant and plays an important role in supporting a healthy immune system, nervous system and metabolic functions. Vitamin E is naturally available in the horse’s diet through fresh spring and summer grazing, herbage and some plant and seed oils. However, autumn and winter grazing and also conserved forage such as hay and haylage will be significantly lower in vitamin E levels due to losses in harvesting, preserving and storage. As little as 20% of vitamin E levels can be found in some hay samples compared to fresh green summer pastures. A large healthy adult horse at maintenance (say 15.2hh weighing 500kg) will require 500IU of vitamin E per day, according to National Research Council guidelines. Performance horses in high levels of work, growing youngstock and convalescing horses may benefit from higher levels of vitamin E in the diet.
